PYTHAGORAS AND BEANS
On the question whether Pythagoras forbade the eating of
beans (expression de la haine que portaient les pythagoriciens aux
gouvernements démocratiques)' or encouraged it (Aulus Gellius 1v,
11, 1-10) it is interesting to note that accounts of Razi, the Arabian
chemist (Abu Bahr Muhammad ibn Zakariyya), attribute his
blindness to an excessive consumption of beans.?
